The patrons of this Saiva Trikuta were Hoysala Ballals II (1173-1220 AD) and queen Ketala devi.  It is one of the well composed ornate, stellate temples of Hoysala period known for its exquisite friezes and intricate wall sculptures which have depictions of both Saiva and Vaishnava pantheons. Facing east, the temple in its axial plan has three sanctums opening into a common mahamandapa and a porch fused with the mahamandapa. Typical stellate plan in the region of garbhagriha and indented square in the region of mahamandapa  is adopted, similar to other trikutachala structures of Hoysala architecture. The stellate jagati is reached by a flight of steps. The moulded adhisthana in the region of mukhamandapa, mahamandapa and the two garbhagrihas has the usual friezes resting over a pada moulding. Each moulding is treated with lenticular mouldings. The miniature shrines flanking the flight of steps at entrances are in different stages of ruin. The three sanctums of this temple are bereft of any images while the western sanctum has an antarala succeeding it. The adhisthana of the temple proper is meticulously treated with friezes of mythological narrations based on the episodes from epics and the Bhagavata. The sculptural representations of dancing Bhairava, Kaliyadamane Govardhanagiridhari, Vishnu as Varadaraja, a huntress are some of the exquisite sculptures of the temple. The temple has beautiful landscape garden in its own enclosure wall with a mahadwara on the north.
