Pre-historic site, Savanadurga

DISTRICT: Bengaluru; TALUK: Magadi
LOCALITY: Savanadurga (Lat.12° 55' N; Long. 77° 18' E)

Savanadurga is about 40 km west of Bengaluru on the Bengaluru-Magadi road. Megaliths comprising stone circles enclosing oblong cists are found scattered in the open field as well as on the slopes of granite outcrops. A few of these were subjected to excavations yielding interesting evidences of Iron Age. The east-west oriented oblong cists with orthostats resting on floor slabs and protruding above the ground to 40-50 cm carry undressed capstones. Usually port hole is found in the eastern orthostat. While a few cists are devoid of capstones, the remaining is found without stone circles.
